We here at Be There love food – especially those dough-enveloped delights loosely categorized as dumplings. Over the next several weeks we will be exploring this comfort food in all its international guises. From tamales and tortellini to samosas and spring rolls, from pasteles and pierogis to mandu and mofongo, we will leave no dumpling unturned. Join us on our weekly journey through…the DUMPLING ZONE.
Just to show you how broadly we interpret the word dumpling, we’re starting the DZ with some things not usually called dumplings but that fit our dough-wrapped tasties definition nonetheless. They are the spinach pies (75 cents) at the Middle Eastern Grocery and Bakery at 1512 W. Foster Ave. These tasty packets of chopped spinach, onion and olive oil are wrapped in a yeast dough and brick oven-baked to a soft golden brown. Other fillings include toothsome artichoke and cheese ($1.65), mushroom and broccoli (($1.25), chicken and mushroom ($1.25), olive, parsley and feta ($1.55) and more. They make a great packed lunches, freeze very well and taste even better when heated in a toaster oven the next day.
