Richard Marx

Flesh and Bone (Capitol) (star) (star)

At a time when ’80s-style pop ala George Michael couldn’t be more out of vogue, Richard Marx is not so much oblivious to trends as unfazed by them. Marx is in strong voice and succeeds on jet-set rockers like “The Image” and the vibrato-guitar driven “What’s The Story,” an anti-tabloid tirade. But much of Marx’s production is too finely polished, and when he indulges a penchant for slick balladry on songs such as “Breathless,” “Flesh and Bone” sounds like Flash and Bolton.
