Thursday’s volleyball clash between Naperville North and Wheaton North lacked the drama of the teams’ previous meeting.
The outcome was also quite different as the top-ranked Huskies (13-0, 4-0) ripped the Falcons 15-7, 15-12 in a DuPage Valley match.
Last spring, Wheaton North slipped past Naperville North in a sectional-title game to advance to the state round. But there wasn’t much desire to pay back the Falcons (4-6-2, 1-3) Thursday.
“They’re a different team, they have a different coach and there’s so many different things about them,” said Naperville North coach Laura Bruce.
The Huskies had an easy first-game victory but struggled in the early stages of the second as the Falcons sprinted to leads of 6-1 and 9-3. But Stoney White (nine kills) and Chris Broyles sparked a 6-0 run to force a 9-9 tie. And after coach Laura Glassman’s Wheaton team reclaimed the lead at 11-9, Mason Phelps launched a 6-1 game-winning run with a service ace.
Pat Martin contributed nine kills for the Huskies, while setter Rob Ridenour had 25 assists. Tom Pierucki led the Falcons with five kills and four blocks.
