Trapshooters at the shuttered Sportsman’s Park range must cool their heels for at least two more weeks while officials of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Naperville Park District await test results from ground water samples taken near the park.

Park District officials closed the range last month and ordered additional testing after IEPA tests found lead in two water monitoring samples.

According to IEPA spokesman Stan Black, the agency is taking the potential environmental hazard very seriously. Additional testing, which was completed about two weeks ago, should determine if the lead content is occurring naturally in the wells or if it is being contaminated by buckshot.

Once the data is evaluated, the Park District Board will determine when or if the range will reopen, said Park District spokeswoman Beth Woods.
