County residents, businesses and construction companies recycled 38 percent of their generated waste in 1996, according to statistics released by the county’s Department of Environmental Management. That total was up from 34 percent a year earlier, but still short of Kane’s stated recycling goal of 47 percent.
The increase reflects Kane’s mandatory commercial recycling ordinance, which requires county businesses to separate their two largest recyclable materials, said Kane County recycling coordinator Gary Mielke. Last year, the commercial sector recycled more than 88,000 tons of paper, metals, plasters and other materials.
