Drivers already inconvenienced by the widening of Milwaukee Avenue were faced with another headache Wednesday, when a broken gas main led police to divert traffic away from Milwaukee between Hintz and Palatine Roads, authorities said.
The operator of a back-hoe used in the construction project accidentally cut a four-inch main at about 7 a.m., and traffic was not allowed to pass through the area until 12:30 p.m., authorities said.

Fire Department officials were standing by at the scene while Northern Illinois Gas Co. workers connected a bypass line around the break, which occurred a short distance north of Palatine Road, officials said.
