Village officials have approved $1.7 million in general obligation bonds to cover sewer repairs and improvements around Steger. Roughly half that amount will go to stem Chicago Road flooding, village President Lou Sherman said.

“We seem to be having `hundred-year floods’ every six months,” Sherman said, explaining the need to upgrade flood water handling. The bonds, he noted, will not increase taxes of residents.

The village will install a 4-foot-diameter pipe to carry rainwater under the state road to a 4- to 6-foot-deep detention pond on Chicago Road’s east side, according to plans developed by engineer Matt Anderson. Water from the pond will then be piped under a railroad track further east to open lands.

Traffic will be limited to one lane for a day during the construction, Sherman said.
