This week at KidNews, we had volcanoes (see Page 1) and chili on the brain. Those two kinda mushed together in our heads until we found ourselves asking: Why can foods like chili cause such bodily eruptions?
Jay Goldstein is a gastroenterologist, a doc who studies disorders of the digestive system. He says spicy foods might irritate your insides, but they won’t cause gas — unless they contain beans (like in Chelios’ chili).
Goldstein says the stomach can’t fully digest beans. So when they pass into the colon, on their way out of the body, bacteria breaks them down into, you guessed it, gas.
