Hoffman Estates Acting Police Chief Clint Herdegen on Monday night presented a Carol Stream man with two awards because the man and his family were buckled up in seat belts during a serious car crash apparently caused by another motorist March 8 in the village.
The other driver received the only ticket in the accident.
David Stachowiak was given the village’s Saved by the Seatbelt Award and Saved by the Child Restraint Seat Award for himself, his wife, Angela, and his four children, ages 22 months to 12 years, who were all in the car at the time of the accident.
The award, presented by both the village and the police department, has been given to only a handful of people in the last three years, said Herdegen. He said it is given to people who escape serious injury and death by having worn seat belts.
