By a 4-2 vote Des Plaines aldermen gave give preliminary approval Monday night to a grant of $10,000 to help build and maintain a skateboard park in a YMCA parking lot in the 300 block of East Northwest Highway.
Aldermen scheduled the meeting in hopes of working out a compromise on the park’s hours of operation and possible noise limitations, officials said.
Don Quinlan, program director for Lattof YMCA, said teenage volunteers were already building wooden ramps and jumps they designed for the skateboard park.
About 75 to 100 people, primarily teenagers, are expected to use the park daily, Quinlan said.
To help reduce noise, Quinlan said volunteers will construct a fence around the park and insulate its structures with noise-reducing materials. The park will be closed Sundays and most Saturdays, he said. Officials and a handful of area residents have expressed concerns about potential injuries and the noise.
