For years, the light traffic on Steger’s southeast side has made the lack of sidewalks a non-issue, although children walk there going to and from Eastview Elementary School.
But village resident Marilyn Tews fears increased traffic from a senior housing complex, now under construction, may endanger schoolchildren walking along the winding streets.
At a recent Village Board meeting, Tews called on the board to study how the housing complex, along with a proposed senior citizen center and youth recreational center, would affect traffic south of the school.
The housing complex is scheduled to be completed this summer. The village’s engineering firm is reviewing seven bids for the proposed senior citizen center and the attached gym.
Steger Village President Lou Sherman told Tews he will discuss the issue with the school superintendent, but Sherman downplayed the potential problem.
