James Galway: Flutist James Galway’s appeal is obvious. His performances combine great charm with tremendous technical proficiency. While he could probably get away with a program of lightweight but showy musical bonbons, he chose to challenge Sunday afternoon’s audience at Orchestra Hall with accessible but distinctly modern sonatas by Martinu, Gaubert and Liebermann. He balanced them with a cozy sonata by Schubert, a difficult but musically fluffy composition by Francesco Morlacchi and a trio of popular pieces (including “Londonderry Aire” and “The Flight of the Bumblebee”) as encores. His breath control, fingering and tone were virtually flawless. His self-deprecatingly humorous introductions added to the recital’s pleasure.
