A special gift: The employees at Opportunity Inc., a Highland Park not-for-profit company that hires developmentally disabled adults, recently proved the adage that whether a cup is half full or half empty is a matter of attitude adjustment.

At their March meeting, they handed a check for $168 to a representative from the Chicago-based Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, a not-for-profit information and support group. The employees had raised the money by holding an ice cream social on Valentine’s Day.

“We were very touched,” said Riverwoods breast cancer survivor and past Y-ME President Joyce Nathan, who accepted the check. “They were very pleased with how their money was going to be used.”

Opportunity benefits and training specialist Astrid Perez said of employees, “They feel very fortunate. They feel that there are others who are less fortunate. And they want to give back to the community.”
