Marist’s volleyball players performed like champions in pool play in their own 16-team invitational Friday, leaving the Redskins one victory shy of advancing to the championship round.

The Redskins (6-3) opened pool play with a 15-9, 15-11 sweep of Richards and then beat Niles North 15-11, 8-15, 16-14 in their second victory over the Vikings (4-4) in a week.

Setter Eric Mazurski (39 assists) helped Jim Bizzieri record 14 kills, Dan Ruane 12 and Rob Prohaska 10 against Niles North.

If Marist defeats Thornton Fractional North Saturday when pool play continues at 1:30 p.m., they will secure advancement to the championship round.

In other tournament action at Marist, Lockport swept No. 5 Lincoln-Way 15-10, 15-9 and Andrew 15-9, 17-15. In pool play at Eisenhower, top-ranked Oak Lawn cruised past Shepard 15-6, 15-3 and Downers Grove South 15-3, 15-13. No. 10 York also rolled, defeating Lane Tech 15-1, 15-9 and Stagg 17-15, 15-3.

Elk Grove d. Fenton 15-3, 12-15, 15-7: Eight kills by Chris Polowy and seven from Jeff Gutsmiedl sparked Elk Grove (5-4). Phil Chung had 20 assists for the victors.

Deerfield d. Notre Dame 15-13, 15-5: Rick Sullivan recorded five kills, five blocks and three ace serves to give Deerfield (1-2) its first victory.

Hersey d. Stevenson 15-12, 15-10: Despite 11 kills from Brian Fitzgerald, Hersey improved to 9-0 behind nine kills from Jim Doman. Chuck Sylvester added 20 assists, two blocks and three aces.

“We had a hard time trying to stop (Fitzgerald),” Doman said. “It was a weaker game for me today, but it was great competition for our team.”

Lake Forest d. Waukegan 15-4, 15-5: Lake Forest (3-0) used 10 kills apiece from Josh Douglas and Aaron Towle and nine from Scott Bullard to sweep. Nick Moy added 33 assists for the Scouts.

Maine South d. Maine East 15-11, 11-15, 15-2: Nick Colic had 23 assists and five kills and Luk Mathew added five killsfor Maine South (3-0).

Mather d. Lake Forest Academy 15-10, 15-8: Cai Li’s eight kills and Dejan Rikert’s 21 assists paced Mather (9-1-1) in the sweep.

Immaculate Heart of Mary 5, Good Counsel 0: Three goals by Theresa Wardell and two by Lauren Sirus helped IHM cruise.

Loyola 3, Niles North 0: In Wilmette, Cecilia Ungari made three saves, earning her sixth shutout in six games for the host Ramblers (4-0-2). Beth Kearney, Megan Elliot and Bridget Killackey all scored.

“We have everyone back, so we expected to be good on defense,” said Loyola coach Tony Schinto. “They are all playing the same spots, so we are looking good.”

Marian Catholic 3, Trinity 1: Marci Joslyn, Michelle Mills and Stacy Pagorek all scored for the Spartans (3-1).

University High 1, St. Ignatius 0: Meilynn Grajawoki scored for the Maroons (3-1), and goalie Arousiak Gabrialain (16 saves) posted her first shutout.
