A Chicago radio legend was saluted by fellow legends of the airwaves Tuesday when longtime WGN morning man Wally Phillips was inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the National Association of Broadcasters convention here.
Dick Orkin praised Phillips, then credited him with putting Orkin into his famous Chickenman character. “In the ’60s, when Wally was on WGN talking to half of the audience, I was on ‘CFL talking mostly to myself. That’s how a Yale graduate came to spend five years in a chicken costume,” quipped Orkin.
In a taped homage, Paul Harvey called Phillips, “a genuinely exemplary individual who truly loves his city.” With that, Phillips was introduced to a standing ovation and the song “My Kind of Town.”
