One word can sum up the playing conditions Tuesday for the outdoor sports: brutal.
While some games were postponed because of the cold temperatures, other hearty athletes and coaches gave it a go.
Is there any wonder why St. Charles has the top-ranked girls’ soccer team? This is one tough bunch.
Not only did the Saints play their scheduled soccer match against DeKalb (a 12-0 victory) but they also played in their regular uniforms, shorts and all. Some girls wore hats, but all wore shorts.
“We’ve played in much worse,” said St. Charles coach Joe Moreau, whose main concern in this kind of weather is pulled muscles.
Foreman’s coach Jim Lynn and his counterpart at Juarez went back and forth on whether to cancel their game. The Foreman players wanted to play–until they got off the bus.
“Once they got there, they started having second thoughts,” Lynn said.
“Nobody got hurt, nobody got frostbite, so it was OK,” said Marist baseball coach Don Kuehner, summarizing the day.
Of course, there is one way to offset the cold–win the game.
“Maybe it felt warmer because we won,” said St. Rita baseball coach Mike Zunica. “It’s always 10 degrees warmer when you win.”
