Des Plaines aldermen debated a proposal Monday night to increase the fines for the most common parking tickets to $25 and $50 from the current rates of $10 and $25, respectively.
The aldermen voted 7-1 to postpone action for further discussion.

Assistant City Atty. Peter Gruber developed the new schedule of fines with police officials. He said the smaller amounts were established primarily in 1983.
Gruber also proposed that the fine for unauthorized parking in a handicapped parking space be increased to $200 from the current $100, and the fine for driving through a funeral procession be increased to $50 from $10.
Gruber said the proposed fine schedule would more closely match fines for parking tickets in 26 local communities.
“I think this is a little much to go from $10 to $25 on the small violations,” said Ald. Jean Higgason.
A date for the further discussion was not immediately set.
