River Pointe Condominiums, the largest new residential project in Des Plaines, is one of the keys to the redevelopment of the northwest suburb’s downtown, according to Mayor Ted Sherwood.

The 156-unit development by Norwood Builders and R. Franczak & Associates was so appealing to Sherwood that he bought the first condominium, and plans to move in in June.

One of the two eight-story, 78-unit brick buildings has been completed and the other one is under construction on the 2.5-acre site at River Road and Northwest Highway.

Several low-rise commercial buildings had to be demolished to clear the way for the condominiums, said Bruce Adreani, Norwood president.

Prices range from $129,900 to $240,900. Buyers have a choice of 13 floor plans with from 976 to 1,788 square feet of living area, offering one to three bedrooms and one or two baths. Amenities include private balconies and indoor parking. Five decorated models are open in the first building.

Centrally located, River Pointe is a short walk from the Metra commuter train station, shopping and restaurants. It takes its name from the Des Plaines River, just to the east. A post office, city hall, police station and public library also are nearby.
