The Will County state’s attorney’s office dismissed a civil complaint against a Channahon man after he cleaned up an illegal dump on his Lockport Township property, Dawn Underhill, a Will County assistant state’s attorney said Thursday.

Arthur Hammel cleaned up the property near Lockport Road and Oak Avenue in the Fairmont neighborhood, Underhill said.

The illegal dump came to the attention of local officials after a fire there burned for two weeks in July 1996. The fire was fueled by piles of burning tires, roofing material, rusted barrels and mattresses. Not even July’s 100-year rains doused the blaze.
