“This is an opportunity to step back and walk away for a little while, to be with my family and decide where I want to go for the next 10 or 12 years remaining in my career,” he said.
The resignation was voluntary, Nicholson said. He told Village President Ronald Hamelberg and the Board of Trustees at a staff meeting Tuesday that he would seek a new “management opportunity,” officials said.
“I have no definite plans, but I would like to get on the top of a mountain with skis or on a beach for a week or so,” Nicholson said. He “suspects” he will return to municipal government again “because this is what I know and love and is what I want to do,” he said.
“Paul really has been helpful in recruiting some top-notch department heads and has been very helpful with the organization and implementation of our strategic plan,” said Hamelberg. “He really has just expressed a desire to try something else.”
Assistant Village Manager Denise Pieroni will serve as interim manager until a permanent replacement can be found, he said.
