A plan to find a place for area residents to in-line skate without disturbing others has been delayed.

To prevent the problem of having enthusiasts skating in the village’s downtown or at local shopping centers and frightening pedestrians and drivers, police had been working with the Downers Grove YMCA to find an off-street skating area, officials said.

Commissioners last year amended an ordinance banning roller skating and skateboarding in business districts to include in-line blades because of the number of complaints that officials had received about skaters in the central business district and train stations.

YMCA representatives have indicated that they have secured agreements with a school and an apartment complex to use their parking lots as outdoor skating arenas for the summer, police said.

Because the ramps used on an in-line skating course are easily damaged by the elements, the YMCA needs to find space to store the ramps before it can embark on the program.
