Renting out extra jail space has proven to be a lucrative business for DuPage County.
Since April 1996, Sheriff Richard Doria’s department has billed the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service more than $800,000 to house illegal immigrants awaiting hearings on their status, says a report released Tuesday at a County Board committee meeting.

Under a two-year contract with DuPage, the INS pays $50 a day per inmate for use of jail space. Based on recent billings, jail officials say the contract should generate in excess of $1 million in revenue this year.
“This will help out the general fund for a lot of things,” said board member Robert Heap (R-Naperville), the Public Safety Committee chairman.
