Some of the best residential features of the past will become part of a new housing development in north suburban Glenview. Heatherfield, a subdivision planned for 308 housing units by the James Companies, will incorporate some neo-traditional elements, including garages in the rear of some residences, and walk-to shopping in order to reduce dependence on the automobile.
“We have worked some two years with the village of Glenview to get rezoning of 79 acres from light industrial/office to residential,” said Jerry James, project manager for the James Companies.
The plan of the maintenance-free community, which is southwest of the intersection of Willow and Waukegan roads, calls for five product lines ranging in size from about 1,000 to more than 2,500 square feet and in price from about $200,000 to $400,000-plus.
The two- and three-bedroom residences will include 70 single-family cluster homes, 58 townhouses, 66 condominiums, 60 row houses and five townhouse villas. Ground breaking is scheduled for this spring, with the first homes completed by the end of the year.

Seven small parks, a green belt with walking paths and a 10-acre park all add up to 47 acres of open space. The 11-acre commercial portion of the project will include the Shops of Heatherfield–with a Jewel/Osco store, plus specialty shops.
