After making three records for a major Nashville label, Brown debuts for the smaller, roots-oriented Hightone. His melodies have traces of pop, his choruses can be broadly dramatic and his lyrics often hokey. But Brown’s straightforward songwriting, drawling voice and hard-edged arrangements let him avoid sappy gloss — whether he’s describing a cocktail waitress trapped “Behind Bars” or declaring he’ll be “Somewhere Over Arkansas” before his lover realizes he’s gone.
