Environmental regulators will update the public on the status of testing at Ft. Sheridan during a meeting of its environmental advisory board Wednesday.
Specifically, officials will focus on testing on the southern half of the base on land being used by the Navy and the Army Reserves.
Even though the Army has moved off the historic fort, it is still responsible for investigating and cleaning up any environmental hazards it has left behind. It moved off the base in June 1993.
To date, the Army has removed asbestos and underground fuel storage tanks, among other hazards. It is working on a $17 million cleanup for two landfills leaking chemicals into Lake Michigan.
More information on the cleanup may be found in information repositories at public libraries in Lake Forest, Highland Park, Highwood and in Building 48G at the former base.
Wednesday’s meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. in Building 900.Enter at the north truck gate. For more information, call 847-266-6321.
