A Romeoville minister said he is preparing to oppose a plan to recruit a Native American tribe to build a land-based gambling casino in Romeoville.
Rev. John Calio, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Romeoville, who attended a Village Board committee meeting this week, said after the session that he does not believe a casino would have a positive moral or economic effect on the community.
Although village officials recently voted in favor of the project, many legal requirements would have to be satisfied before a casino could be built.
Under federal regulations, land for the casino would have to be declared a reservation for Native Americans with Illinois roots who were willing to operate a casino.

The operation of a land-based casino would need the approval of Gov. Jim Edgar.
