As part of that future, the district agreed to buy 75 acres at 191st Street and Harlem Avenue as a possible site for the third high school. But school officials said the district also might opt to build the third high school on land the district already owns in Manhattan.
The decision to expand follows the results of a survey of district residents in which 61 percent of the respondents favored expanding the district into three separate 4-year high schools.
Population pressures are pushing the school board toward expansion to cope with rapid residential growth in New Lenox, Mokena, Frankfort, Frankfort Square and Manhattan.
