New Lenox officials defended Wednesday night an updated comprehensive plan that emphasizes preservation of open space.
“The purpose of the plan is to focus, not cut off, development,” planning consultant Jeff Palmquist told those at a public hearing.
Mayor John Nowakowski said he doesn’t expect growth to falter because of the plan. “We haven’t had any problems in 20 years developing,” he said.

Last month, developers bashed the plan and claimed that low-density subdivisions would be economically unfeasible.
The updated plan calls for a pattern of lower population density and more open space as development moves out from the center of town. But attorney Doug Schlak, spokesman for a coalition of about 35 local builders and developers, said the plan would force the building of hard-to-sell, high-price houses.
