Palos Heights residents may be starting the new year with new water and sewer rates.
The Water and Sewer Committee is expected to meet Tuesday night to discuss the rate increase so that members can make a recommendation that will be passed along to the entire City Council.
Director of Public Works Jerry Martin last week told members of the Water and Sewer Committee that the water rate of $2.50 per 1,000 gallons should be raised to $2.65 per $1,000 gallons. The sewer rate also may need to go up from the $4 flat monthly fee to $6 a month, he said.
The proposed rate increase is a result of Alsip, where Palos Heights purchases its water, raising its rate 2 percent or $1.27 per 1,000 gallons to $1.292 per 1,000 gallons.
“Alsip has raised our rates two times and we haven’t passed that increase along to either our residential or commercial customers,” Ald. Julie Corsi said.
Martin said Alsip’s rate increase can’t be ignored this time.
