Mother McAuley and Naperville North weren’t ranked to start the season, but that may change soon.

Host McAuley outscored 12th-ranked Resurrection 10-1 in overtime for a 64-55 triumph Saturday.

And Naperville North sank 15 free throws in the final quarter to prevail 62-52 over No. 13 Joliet in the Waubonsie Valley tournament.

Resurrection coach Frank Zepf knew his team’s loss to McAuley was largely due to early-season mistakes. But that didn’t make the GCAC Red loss any less frustrating.

“I didn’t expect everything to be in midseason form at this point,” said Zepf. “The problem was we made far too many turnovers (23), our shot selection was poor and we hit just 15 of 37 free throws. Those are basic things we need to improve.”

McAuley (2-0, 2-0) was led by Beth Dilling with 24 points–five in overtime–11 rebounds and eight steals.

Jenny Accardo led Resurrection (1-1, 0-1) with 18 points, while Beth Gawlinski added 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Naperville North outscored Joliet 28-18 in the fourth quarter in its victory. Hollie Jo Renner scored 17 points, Gena Earl 15 and Shannon Sweeney 13 for North.
