The Romeoville Village Board voted Wednesday night to approve an ordinance that establishes new fees for ambulance calls.

Fire Chief Carl Churulo said the increased rates will raise a “conservative $75,000” for the department.

Although residents are taxed for Fire Department services, the village collects charges for ambulance calls only from residents who have insurance coverage. If a resident does not have insurance, the department does not pursue the collection, which amounts to 33 percent of the cost of the call, Churulo said.

Churulo said non-residents without insurance are pursued for the entire service fee.

Churulo said the department was forced to look at other funding sources because of budget constraints.
