Like fellow Norman, Okla., residents Flaming Lips, Chainsaw Kittens concoct an dense, idiosyncratic musical universe, mixing a walloping glam-punk guitar attack with “Sgt. Pepper’s” orchestrations, buzzing synthesizers and Tyson Meade’s extravagant vocals. Mead’s oblique lyrics often touch on gay subject matter, but the fear, disillusion, alienation and loneliness he expresses are universal. The camp flourishes and obsessive intensity can grate a little, but the band’s singular vision is largely compelling.
