player ready...Calling his party’s candidate an “embarrassment,” McHenry County Democratic Party Chairman Frank McClatchey on Monday endorsed Republican state Rep. Ann Hughes (R-Woodstock) over James Kappel.
The move was unprecedented in the county, as far as two-term party chairman McClatchey remembered.
“She’s just the better candidate,” McClatchey said of Hughes. “She’s got the issues that mean a lot to this district, she’s got a better record and there are times you have to take the party labels off and just go with your instincts with what you think is better for the district.”
Kappel, 35, a carpet installer from McHenry, has been on the outs with the county Democratic organization for at least a year. He once unsuccessfully challenged McClatchey for the party chairmanship.
Kappel could not be reached for comment.
