Village trustees Wednesday authorized Dale Patterson to explore buying a privately owned airport in the center of a site proposed for the third regional airport near Peotone.

The owner of Sanger Airport and officials at the Illinois Department of Transportation confirmed Thursday they have been contacted by Patterson, who is a member of Monee’s Village Board.

Patterson on Wednesday said it has been more than five years since Monee, Frankfort and New Lenox representatives discussed using the Howell Airport near New Lenox as a local airport. Midway between Monee and Beecher, the 120-acre Sanger Airport has been open to general aviation use for the last 38 of its 49 years. It has two approved runways and offers an instrument approach.
