A 79-year-old resident was duped out of $2,425 in an alleged sweepstakes scam, police reported Monday.
Police said the resident got a telephone call last week at his home from a man claiming to be a representative for a sweepstakes company in Atlanta. The caller told him that he had just won $1 million in a contest, but must first mail $2,500 in acquisition fees.

The resident sent his first two payments to an address in Atlanta. He later mentioned the phone call to an employee of a senior center in Arlington Heights where he was visiting. The employee called police.
