The fate of the Coral Inn, a bar in rural Marengo recently shut down amid charges of illegal gambling and risque dancers, is in the hands of the Illinois Liquor Commission.
On Aug. 21, the commission heard an appeal by the bar’s manager, Thomas Heron, who argued he was not given a fair hearing before the McHenry County Liquor Commission, which revoked his liquor license in May.
Heron said McHenry County officials went ahead with the hearing even though he was not represented by an attorney. Kristen Nei, an attorney with the state’s attorney’s office, argued that Heron was given ample time to hire an attorney and county officials had a legal right to proceed.
A decision is expected within a month, Nei said.
Heron was allowed to reopen the bar while he awaits a decision from his appeal.
