player ready...The Army, in conjunction with the Illinois and U.S. Environmental Protection Agencies, will hold two informational meetings Wednesday concerning a recommended plan to clean up two landfills at Ft. Sheridan.
The landfills leak tainted liquids into a storm drain that empties into Lake Michigan and emit toxic gases in violation of federal and state water and air standards. The recommended cleanup plan is estimated to cost $16.9 million
The public is invited to review the plan and alternatives, including the possibility of excavating the waste, and to comment on them. Environmental officials will be available to answer questions.
The plan to clean up landfills 6 and 7 is called an interim plan. If testing finds other toxins, the Army will be responsible for their cleanup.
Wednesday’s meetings will be open houses with no formal presentations. The hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Moraine in Highwood.
