For the second time in two years, Monee Township is seeking a zoning variance to expand its government facility on Monee’s south end. This time, however, it appears the zoning variance will be supported by the Village of Monee.

The zoning variance would allow the township government to create more office and meeting space by expanding the west end of its building.

Monee Village President Larry Kochel responded to the request Wednesday by waiving fees.

“I’m glad to see they’re reapplying,” he said.

Much of the credit for the township’s Aug. 8 reapplication should go to Kochel, who sent township officials a written invitation. He later championed the variance at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, prompting commissioners to voice their general support.

But there is no guarantee that village approval of the zoning variance will result in an expansion of the township facility on Egyptian Trail. Since being rebuffed by the village in 1994, township officials have been looking at alternatives.

The township is exploring the possibility of constructing a facility in University Park, which also is in Monee Township. University Park and Monee Township representatives are scheduled to meet in September to discuss legal and financial issues retated to the proposed joint venture.

Township Board members have been enthusiastic about relocating the offices to University Park, which is home or workplace to five of the seven elected officials.
