Third-string Bears quarterback Steve Stenstrom completed 11 of 15 passes Sunday and moved his team of second-stringers into position for Kevin Butler’s game-winning field goal.
So after a 24-21 victory over Miami, Stenstrom was asked if he felt his performance would move him ahead of Dave Krieg into the No. 2 spot behind Erik Kramer.
“I play behind two great quarterbacks,” Stenstrom began his politically correct answer. “My goal is to keep ready so I can be a solid backup for either one.”
Coach Dave Wannstedt lauded all three of his quarterbacks. Kramer completed 11 of 18 passes, two for touchdowns. Krieg completed 9 of 13.
What set up the Stenstrom-led drive to Butler’s 22-yard field goal was linebacker Greg Briggs’ tackle of Karim Abdul-Jabbar in the end zone for a safety, tying the score 21-21 with 5:10 to play.
“The safety gave us a little extra time, and I appreciated that,” said Stenstrom. “I was prepared to go in our two-minute offense if we needed it.”

Stenstrom was claimed off waivers from Kansas City last year. He was a contract holdout, so he’s going through his first training camp.
On the final drive, Stenstrom completed 5 of 5 passes for 56 yards, three of them to fullback Tony Carter, and ran 14 yards himself to bring the ball to the Miami 4-yard line for Butler’s kick.
