The Federal Transit Administration has awarded a $1.7 million grant to Pace to buy seven buses that comply with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act.

Pace will buy buses equipped with wheelchair lifts.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Federico Pena said, “Investing in Pace’s transit fleet . . . will improve the quality of life for the elderly and people with disabilities.”

Mindy Laflamme , spokeswoman for Pace, said the buses would be 40-foot-long coaches that seat about 45 people and would be used in express service.

Pace could have the new buses in a year, she said.
