In Chicago 2,807 police officers will be assigned to security duty at the Democratic National Convention during the last week of August.
Those officers will be drawn from several specialized units such as gang crimes, special functions and tactical teams from each of Chicago’s 25 police districts.
During the convention period, days off and vacations for all of Chicago’s 13,400 police officers will be restricted and some officers will be assigned to work extended-duty days, said Chicago police spokesman Paul Jenkins.
“In Chicago, every officer is trained in the proper response to domestic-violence situations,” Jenkins said. “Our plans for security at the convention will not impact on the police patrols in the neighborhoods.”
