A love yarn: Watching babies leave Victory Memorial Hospital spurred volunteer Ann Schenck to action. “I see so many babies going home dressed so cute and others with nothing,” said Schenck, a Waukegan septuagenarian.
A longtime knitter, Schenck thought of making booties. “I called the nursery and said, `I have leftover yarn. Would you like me to make something?’ They said, `Great,’ ” Schenck said.
She knits about one pair a week and at last count had donated about 250 pairs of booties to the hospital’s New Family Center.

And Schenck still has not run out of yarn. “Friends give me their leftover yarn, and so do the nurses at the hospital. I have plenty,” she said.
In addition to yarn, she has plenty of desire. “I love having something to do,” she said.
