A former Cicero policeman who barricaded himself in his apartment and had a standoff with police for almost seven hours last year has been found innocent by reason of insanity.
James Cihla, 59, now of 4024 W. Kane Ave., McHenry, was found innocent of aggravated discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm by Judge Conrad Floeter in a two-hour bench trial after a psychiatrist testified that Cihla is a manic depressive.
On Sept. 19, Floeter will decide whether to commit Cihla as a mental patient or enable Cihla to be treated as an outpatient.
Cihla, who was a Cicero policeman for eight years in the 1960s, barricaded himself in his Crystal Lake home on Aug. 20, 1995, after becoming distraught.
