It’s that time of year again.
Fashion time, that is–a time when glossy magazines issue their Ten Commandments on what Thou Shalt Wear for Fall.
Can’t afford the clothes? Don’t want to look like a Prada clone? Tired of heroin chic? No problem. Flip past the pretty pictures and do what Playboy readers claim they’ve been doing for years:
Read the articles. You might not be informed, but you will be entertained.
Here’s what a few folks from the fashion front have had to say this month:
“I’ve been to the department stores in America, and it was the same colors, cuts, even the same buttons . . . (Calvin Klein) did copy the Armani style.”–Giorgio Armani in Vogue
“Armani looks like me. What am I going to do? He looks like old Ralph Lauren.”–Ralph Lauren in Vogue
“I’d gone to some modeling agencies in Chicago, and nobody would take me. They all took one look at my platinum blond hair and said, `Honey, no way. You look like you should be serving beer in a bar.’ When I walked into Playboy’s offices, I played it cool. Playboy, I figured, didn’t want the slutty look, they wanted the girl-next-door look. I wore a little suit, collar buttoned to the neck. . . . A photographer who was about 80 years old took my Polaroid. Three days later, I was Miss October.”–Jenny McCarthy, co-host of MTV’s “Singled Out” and former Playboy Playmate of the Year, in Allure magazine
“I’m a big woman. I need big hair.”–Singer Aretha Franklin in Harpers’ Bazaar
“People still complain about editorial–I hear about `the girls in magazines with sloppy hair who look all strung out, like poor, little ugly things.’ Any woman I would like to sit down with and have a conversation with will not dress up to look like a photo in a fashion magazine. . . . I can’t really have an intelligent conversation with a woman who will say, `I can’t go out of the house looking like a junkie.’ Nobody is telling you to go out of the house looking like a junkie. It’s a fashion magazine.”–Designer Marc Jacobs in W
“When I die, I want to come back as Catherine Deneuve in mod clothes and wraparound sunglasses.”–Singer Suzanne Vega in In Style
“Packaging simply has taken over the world. It leads to uniformity in how we live. . . . Then there are geniuses like the whole slew of American designers who’ve managed to prepackage life almost in its entirety, from bed linens and underwear to tuxedos. All that’s missing is a chain of designer hair salons, and later a designer home-construction unit. Or how about designer dry-cleaning chains?”–W’s pseudonymous columnist “Louise J. Esterhazy”
