A 31-year-old Marengo man was indicted by a McHenry County grand jury last week in the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend in their apartment on July 13.

Rodney J. Graves of 585 1/2 Grant Highway, an unemployed wood cutter, has been charged with stabbing Kaylene Hotvedt, 36, an Arlington Heights hotel worker, several times in the neck. Hotvedt’s body was found on the bedroom floor.

Police said they do not know what triggered the killing, but friends and family members told police of a pattern of strife and violence between the couple, who had known each other for about two years. Graves was being held Sunday on $1 million bond for an appearance Friday before Judge Conrad Floeter of Circuit Court.
