Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain are doubles partners on the pro tour, though the relationship might be a little bit strained after an eventful press conference Wednesday at the Stone Mountain Tennis Center.
Novotna, apparently perturbed by her 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 singles loss, as well as Sanchez Vicario’s occasional habit of questioning calls, was in a feisty postmatch mood.
Asked if she would confront Sanchez Vicario about the incidents, Novotna said: “Yes, when I’m done here I’m going to talk to her and I’m going to tell her, `You should not do this, you are a bad girl.’
“No, of course not. That’s the way she is and you know, it’s her problem. I know when I step on the court that I am a more popular player than she is. Whatever she is doing or whenever she is like that, she has to live with it. And for me the most important (thing) is that I know who I am and that I am more popular than she is, no matter what.”
Responded Sanchez Vicario: “I’m very surprised that she says that. I was just doing my job and concentrating and playing well. Maybe she was disappointed because every time she has a chance, she lost against me. But I didn’t question any calls.”
