Give Me Some Wheels (Capitol) (star) (star) (star) 1/2

It doesn’t take long for Bogguss to climb into high gear in this energetic album. The title song (co-written with Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison) kicks things off with a brassy urgency, which is echoed in the sassy “Feelin’ About You.” In “She Said, He Heard,” co-written with Don Schlitz, Bogguss neatly describes just how badly communications can erode when a relationship goes sour, even if the emotional flame hasn’t entirely died out (“She said, `I’m mad’/He heard `I’m leaving’/She said, `I need your attention’/He heard, `I want you to crawl’ “). The bluesy gem “No Way Out” is pure Bogguss but it feels as if it might have been written for Bonnie Raitt, too. As such, much of “Give Me Some Wheels” conceivably could find crossover support on rock stations.
