Downers Grove will continue and might even expand its park-and-ride service for commuters at the edge of the village, commissioners said.
Officials said Monday that they would agree to a three-year lease with the operators of the Fairview Plaza Shopping Center at Fairview Avenue and 75th Street that provides 48 commuter parking spaces.
Commuters can drive to the shopping center parking lot, park for free and then spend $1 to ride a Grove Commuter Shuttle to the Metra Burlington-Northern station in downtown Downers Grove. The village will pay the shopping center about $12 per day for the spaces, officials said.
Mayor Betty Cheever said staff would examine sites along 75th Street for a similar program to further ease traffic near the train station.
