Trainer Richard Mandella had to be coaxed into entering longshot Talloires in the Grade II Caesars Palace Turf Championship–even though the horse’s owners came up with $38,000 in supplemental and nomination fees. But the 6-year-old chestnut made the gamble look like a sound investment Sunday at Hollywood Park.
Idle since last Dec. 10, Tailloires set a course and stakes record in the mile-and-a-half race, beating last year’s Arlington Million winner Awad by 2 1/2 lengths and heavily favored Sandpit. Mandella, who also trains Sandpit, said both of his horses likely would make the trip to Arlington International for this year’s Million.
