The pilot of the single-engine aircraft that flipped and crashed into an excavation ditch Wednesday during takeoff at the Aero Estates Airport suffered little more than a broken nose and bruised ego. Clifford T. Osborn of Oak Park was treated at Edward Hospital in Naperville and released Wednesday.

Osborn, 55, apparently lost control of the airplane and veered off the runway. The 1960 Beechcraft struck a mound of gravel and flipped into a construction ditch, the DuPage County sheriff’s office said.

James Smith, who was working at the site, suffered cuts to one hand when he tried to help Osborn out of the damaged airplane. Smith declined medical treatment.
